Hey Hey I have noticed that I did not put up alot of drawings this year. Well that is going to change now. I picked out a few of meany drawings I have done over the course of the summer. So here are a few that I liked. And I got tones more to put up too.

This cool dude got a demo from me, but afterward requested a different drawing. He had something special in mind. I won't forget this couple. The girl actually admitted to wear goggles on rides such as Bohemoth. She took the goggles out of her bag and demonstrated to me what she looks like. Too bad I was way too far into the drawing at that point to add them in.

Since there's been no official replacement for raptor week (yet), I figured I would share some of my drawings from the past month and a bit.

The first in a string of good (and fast) drawings. Funny how a big rush at 9:45 will bring out the best in you.

My drawings from raptor week, which finished this past Sunday. There's been no official count yet, but I'm pretty sure Ray "the Raypter" won, with me in a close second, surprise contestant Ed in third, a dejected-looking David in fourth, and HB, with no recorded raptor drawings, in last, (although he assures me he did one. Where's the proof?!).

The point system goes: 1 for a raptor, 1 for a jetpack (Chewy approved), 1 for a giant pair of scissors (or equally deadly device), and 1 for incorporation into another theme. Warning! Not all the drawing below are good, but I include them because they meet the criteria of the contest.

"It can't be a velociraptor because we would crush it." 1 point.

Why is this raptor not running? Some questions cannot be answered. 2 points

This raptor looks terrible. 2 points.

There's no excuse for this raptor not to have a jetpack. 1 point.

So, I don't have much to post since I realized far too late that I should probably keep my finger off the lens when I'm taking pictures of drawings I like, BUT, I do have two drawings that I really like from today.The first one, the guy's face was awesome to draw but I really like how the girl's face came out too, the guy was as Aaron called him "the Ferrari of caricature faces". The second one I like because I did it pretty quickly as it was starting to rain and they both had such cool faces. Also, they only wanted black and white at first but ended up getting colour which was awesome because I really wanted to colour it anyway. The picture of the last one kinda sucks because it was getting dark and rainy ._. boo weather.

One of the first drawings of the season that I was really proud of.

Guy ended up looking like Kanye. Lost the likeness a little, but the overall drawing was nice. Colours look faded because of poor picture taking.

The guy in the front is a friend of mine, so I felt comfortable taking his drawing a little further. They should all be like this, but better.

More friends. The girl in the lower left was uninspired because she just loooks too "normal" to me. I've gotta start seeing the wierdness in the normies.

This guy spent about a minute fixing his hair with his smart phone. I knew right away what to exaggerate.

This woman didn't seem too thrilled with the sketch, but I was. I kinda wish she'd rejected it so I could take it home. I find it more awkward when you really like and they don't then vise versa.

Theses first two were a from while ago.

These next two were just from today. I'm getting more and more comfortable with the new-new marker. I find that I'm bypassing its stiffness by using it more on an angle. That way, it's easier to change line thickness by applying pressure. Although, I still find myself with sore hands after because of all the pressure that I apply.. :/

After not drawing for the bulk of pre-season. It appears as if I finally had the opportunity this week to get more than a single 4 or 5 hour day in the chair.

A quick demo drawing from Saturday afternoon as a warm up and to generate a fanbase to pull from. My exaggerations still aren't where I want them to be; had this been more chinny and grinny and eyebaggy and I really would have knocked one out of the park.

But I am super excited about where my drawings are going.

P.S. when I pulled them; this person said they didn't have any money. They then bought this and a mat with a stamp.

Ok so I had the awesomest group of girls EVER and they were all so great for caricature. The first four drawings I am totally in love with especially the second one, the likeness on that one was like dead on, the girl was actually a little freaked out by it, haha. The last two were aight, but I wasn't totally happy with the likeness, buuut I posted them anyhows.

Not that 100% happy with these...but Seth told us to post, and post I shall.

I still have so far to go with caricatures and I'm no where near where I'd like to be but it is a journey that only comes with more line mileage.

The main reason I'm posting these two is because I thought they were fairly successful in being night drawings. I'm still more happy with my colouring than my drawings, but I gotta keep telling myself that the only way to get better is to keep drawing.

Well, I finally got some pictures up on here. I present some of the photos I have taken so far. I put them in chronological order, so they should be getting better as you go down. Enjoy!

This couple had an interesting request. The guy was white, and the woman black, and they asked to have the colours switched so he was black and she was white. The effect of his features with a dark skin tone made him look more indian than black, but they seemed to like it. They were fun to draw.

The image below is one of those pictures that seemed to be going wrong right from the beginning, but actually turned out better than I expected. I can't say it's a great likeness, but it was passable, and I like the overall picture.

Finally a couple good drawing days. I really think I'm starting to see the caricature now... I still find it hard oftentimes. And I disagree with my execution a lot of the time after the fact, but I think I'm finally getting some okay designs out of my live caricature stuff. The two things I still need to work on is to really get my shapes to fit together tightly, I get it sometimes I find, but other times they don't quite work. The other thing I really need to strengthen, I find, is my sense of structure. There are a ton of other things that I definitely need to improve... but those are my two biggest weaknesses... That and humor (the hard one, heh).

Just used peach in the shadows to unify a little bit.

I love the way light hits some people's faces.

Late at night is much harder, I find... but I like this night drawing for once. At least I like the drawing of the woman on the right better than some.

Two interesting children.

One of the cutest and most interesting people I've seen. This drawing isn't as good as the second drawing I did of her, I don't think. But it started the first good drawing day off. And she was absolutely fucking adorable too.

Its a big post this time but i just feel like i been progressing on my style and a lot more aspects, i altough i know some of my weakneses. i would love if you guys criticize some of my work even nitpick cuz i really wanna get better. i just did this yesterday, though it was clean and cute, the likeness was preety good to bad i cant show ya

Hi there.. This is a redraw/reject, whatev you want to call it. Please excuse the tiny second neck under the head, and the little notes on the side... of what I need to work on/change. I wanted to post something to 'contribute,' but I just have this drawing from like, June. My self-critique would be to change the monstrosity of the neck, to not make the eyes/face look 2D, colouring/shading, and clean up the scribbly hair & background. Hopefully I can bring home/take pics of current stuff and get that critiqued =)

This guy sat down for Ella... but I couldn't pass him up. I also threw down a pass of Tuscan red after I'd finished everything else, as I was saying that I wanted to do in my previous post. And it unified the browns, and pulled the forms I wanted pulled forward both in terms of contrast as well as in temperature. Overall I give it the drawing a B, but because I think I learned a lot from coloring it... I'll give it a B+.

I think I finally started to exaggerate in the right directions yesterday..... Yay. Around 6-8 oclock I was doing some of the more exaggerated drawings that I've done... straight to marker. I just didn't get any photos because I had a bit of a crowd. But I'm glad that I find that I'm finally starting to learn how to exaggerate. It's definitely taken a while... and this is no shining example.... as it was the first one that I started really being able to draw what I was seeing in my head, but I was proud of myself. Now to work harder so that I don't lose it.

The Hazards of the Job

This post is more about something that happened in my last shift, and not so much about the drawings. Im not as jazzed about the drawings as I'd like to be.

It started out when I got a family of brits come over for some drawings (ok, technically only half were brits, the other half had no accent and I assume were Canadian relatives). I did three colour bodies one after the other

They loved 'em, and bought mats for each drawing. Then the sister of the third kid there sat down for a drawing.

Well... I made her cry. I felt terrible about it. I thought it was a cute drawing too.

What I wonder is, she watched me draw the other three, what did she expect I would do?

I need to work more on my line variety...my hair work...noses and eyes...body work...colouring...background pizzaz...spelling, lots of stuff. It's not quite there yet, but I'm improving, which I like to see.

This was a fun one to do. But I don't like it now. C

In hindsight I completely lost the likeness in this one. But I tried and I learned a lot while I was drawing it. C
It was also one of those really incredibly weird lighting situations that I am a huge fan of. You can tell in the reference photo that the light was a cool bluish. And there is a huge amount of a yellow reflected light. I tried to capture it, but I found as I worked further into the temperature's of the colors... I was simply muddying the values. In hindsight the smartest thing to do would have been to drop the value of the front plane of the face down a couple notches... possibly with a pass of tuscan red. But damn... that's scary. In the future.... I'll give it a shot when one of those lighting situations pops up again.

Yeah. He had an awesome stutter. Likeness on him is alright. Dimensionality is improving, but only in noses. Drawing of her sucks the bag. C

I waned to push her nose into space... and I just made it look like she is a brownnoser. I like how the nose works in the initial drawing though. I should have also made them chubbier. C-

I like the drawing I did of him. I saw him and had something very specific in mind... but when he sat down.... I didn't know how to draw it and maintain a likeness. I don't particularly like the drawing of her.. but his is alright. I should have gone after my initial impression. It'd have been so much better. I mean... I even saw the drawing before he sat down. Gahhhrrgh. B- on him C+ on her.

And them... before they had seen the drawing. I like the drawing of the guy in the middle. I don't know if I really agree with some of the likeness here. It's not quite what I want it to be... but I really tried to capture the personalities and the initial impressions I got from these folks more in their posture and overall emotional imprint rather than simply in their features. I need to learn how to grab both. Overall I'd give the likeness a C. But it feels like them... so maybe a B-.

My favorite part of drawing this drawing was talking to the family as I was drawing it. I'm trying to improve my ability to banter with the customers and be witty without having to devote any thought to it. I simply let my mind focus on the drawing and let my mouth spew every random anecdote that comes into my head, (of course I have a few lines that I use every time... just to start up the conversation.)

It was awesome because by the end of the drawing we had a hundred little inside jokes that we continued to laugh at. And I could get away with saying even the most mundane thing and they all thought it was the most brilliant comedy. With people I get along with well, this is fairly easy to do... but it is extremely hard for me to do with people that just don't get my sense of humor.

I realised halfway through this dance drawing I was subliminally referencing one of my buddy Jay’s drawings, so this one goes out to you Turtle Jay.

This 50% off deal has been forcing me to grow in an interesting direction. To be honest, I think it has been good for me. It has broadened my range, I think. I can either go super fast and cartoony, or I can drop back to first gear and really attempt to figure a face out. I need to time myself for my drawings sometime soon.... but I started a double color body drawing probably around 9:35 tonight and finished it and assembled it in a large frame with a pesky too big cardboard backing by 9:51. So it has definitely forced me to speed up. But I've also had a chance to slow down and work on my color and the dimensionality of my shapes as well. And I believe strongly that a good caricature does not have to be a slow caricature. It is entirely, in my opinion, about chasing that initial impression. And oftentimes I find if I do an underdrawing I lose that initial impression, or I find something else that I shoot for that... doesn't work quite as well.

This is an older drawing I did of Phil. Nothing brilliant, but I felt good about it at the time because I felt as if I had observed the light well. In retrospect I really could have punched the colors up a lot. I give it a solid B.

Here's one I did of Gordon today. It didn't end up matching what I had in mind... but It's a better Gordon that I've drawn in the past. I like the fact that I tried out a completely different coloring method from what I'm used to doing... I laid the color temperatures in rather than using only the value of the browns to push and pull the skin around. Definitely a method I need to continue working at... but I like it. I give it a C+

A demo I did that ended up selling. She watched as I did a quick exaggerated caricature and I begged her to sit down, and she said she didn't have any money... but she ended up scrounging up change from her group of friends to buy it. C+.
I like the gag though.

Still working on my relationships, the dimension of my drawings, line variety, control and quality, cleanliness, exaggerating the energy of my shapes, and most of all... likeness.

I had a lot of fun today. At first I expected the day to be complete and utter crap due to the heat... and the chance of a severe thunderstorm. But the storm struck before I even arrived... and it was torrential. After that the day was fairly clear all around... and there were few enough people in the park for me to be able to take my time with a drawing here or there. Rather than simply fighting the half price situation.

I started this one fairly early in the day... and I decided to change the composition from my normal "mermaid generic situation" because Jay's been doing interesting stuff with his mermaids and... I hate my mermaid body. So... essentially I used what I could remember from a Joe Bluhm mermaid body that I saw once upon a time. I definitely prefer the composition, but I'll keep changing it up to make it better.

Good ol' shopping drawing. They had great faces... I wish the got color but black and white was all they could afford.

Okay. This was actually a bit of a weird situation. These two came by early in the morning and asked about the prices... and essentially said "$7.50 a person? That's a ripoff! We'll think about it." And I really wanted to draw them. But late in the day... lo and behold... in the middle of a cute, exaggerated drawing that I did they came back. Unfortunately I had two people in line waiting for me so I couldn't get to them right away. So they sat down for my buddy Jules. And I finished my drawing and... didn't have anyone to draw. So I decided that I'd go to town and attempt to fry up some bacon. I had a blast. It was definitely fun to let loose and try to push my exaggeration a smidge in the right direction. I think I did alright, honestly. It's not my best likeness or my best drawing... but it is one of my drawings that I chased after my initial impressions... and I think I did an okay job trying to capture it. I don't know if I'd call this bacon just yet... but at least it is a step in the right direction.

Yeah. Unfortunate incidental. I had to take a photo of it.
They brought their family and I ended up drawing 6 women. So in the last few days I've done two groups of 7 and one group of 6. I'm definitely getting better at drawing smallicatures.

Okay. So recently I don't know what's been happening but I'm definitely less happy with my stuff than I was for a while... I guess I haven't been improving as much as I would like to be. Or maybe I'm not pushing things as hard as I could be. I mean from time to time I'll get a drawing that I'll like... but it isn't really worthy of posting on C'dub... let alone my blog. Part of it may be that the thing that I know I need to work on the most (finding interesting relationships in a face) I have a hard time doing because I try to stay fast and go straight to marker. But, honestly, that's just an excuse. So I'm actually going to go a backwards route in order to achieve the same objective. I was talking to Andrea over wings and a beer about what I need to work on... and it goes back to the good old days of what I've always kind of glossed over. Generally; my faceshapes are pretty boring. There is very little energy in them... and part of that is the lack of a distinct proportional relationship being established between the cranium and the jaw... or rather a lack of a distinct CHOICE about the design of the forms of a face. And second to that... I rarely think about one of the things that I love most about drawing... Rhythm. I lack that music in my caricature drawings.

So. I'm going to work very hard at the simple bits first. I don't think I'll put the training wheels back on... but I'm going back to basics. And I'm also going to grade myself, because I think that analyzing my problems in an academic method helps me improve.

C+ Structure and line quality and description of form are... sucky.

B. My half bodies suck.

C. I hate the faceshape with the burning passion of a thousand suns exploding.

These two women had great contrasting face shapes, and wanted bodies that were the opposite of their own. I was afraid that I couldn't draw a muscle woman, but hey, surprise. Good things will happen on the page if you let them.

This woman wanted "something military." After a short bout of panic, I drew this. The face is for poop(That nose is grating on my nerves), but the tank was great fun to draw.

Hey all. I am now entering my hat in the ring. It's not great, but it's something. It's a practice sketch I did up just now using this amazing book I bought at Chapters a few months ago. It goes through pictures of different kids and teens, ranging in age from very young to not very young. There's even a cool section that shows pictures of someone going from 0 to 40 years old, or something like that. It's a cool book. Anyway, more sketches to come from me! I'm out!

Said she forgot her debit in the car.

Wanted a sketch of his pikachu, did both.

Asked for demos, at different times.

Said it was shit.

They posed like this of their own free will!

Asked for an opus, came back 30 min later to pick it up, said he didn't want it because he wanted his whole mouth, after asking for a terminator face.

'Make the boys funny, make the girl cute! Oh, and we'll pay later when we pick it up.'

So today I learned that people pay THEN and not LATER.
Also I need better line quality. And, you know, practice and growth in general, but that's why I'm here.

2009 the beggining

So this is the beginning of a whole new season of caricatures at Canada's Wonderland. Returning artists like myself display signs of winter rust. It makes me kind of sad to follow that last post with my rusty spring caricatures so I will preface with this doodle i drew on break of one of the game staff.
looking at these now I really see the vast room for improvement in my live caricatures. I hope to improve my exaggerated structures and their definition with shading. It is something that these drawing sorely lack.
